Insignia is the exclusive brand of an American electronics store. Their new HD Radio portable receiver is at the opposite end of the price range from Microsoft's Zune, selling for around US$50. Of course it doesn't have all the features of the Zune, but as a basic, FM radio that also receives HD Radio, Americans can now carry IBOC in their pockets.
Zune now with HD Radio
For readers in the United States, Microsoft have released a Zune handheld player with a built-in IBOC receiver.
Online retailers such as Amazon are already taking orders for two versions, one with 32 Gb
of memory and another with 16 Gb.
Digital Radio
The system for digital radio that has been approved by the Federal Communications Commission for domestic broadcasting is IBOC, also known as NRSC-5 and marketed under the brand name HD Radio.
Digital Television
The system for digital television used for television broadcasting is ATSC, which has two flavours: 8-VSB for terrestrial and QAM for cable. For a country the size of the United States, it is remarkable to outsiders that digital switch-over has already taken place - in June 2009. Now, only a small number of low-power analogue stations or relays remain.
When comparing internet retailers, remember to include the cost of delivery in your calculations.
Retailers with low headline prices can often have higher delivery charges. Comparison websites usually list the lowest headline price first, but the best deal may be lower down the list.
I'd be grateful to receive information about other receivers.
